Surviving the Teenage Years when you have Asperger’s Syndrome

We all remember high school, don’t we? The friends, the enemies, the social rules that changed every day. It was crazy for us. But just imagine how much more difficult it is for teenagers with Asperger’s Syndrome.

The strangest IEP (Individual Education Plan) meeting I ever conducted was with a 13-year-old boy with Asperger’s Syndrome. For the sake of this post, we will call him Fred.

Fred was in a meeting with me, his parents and five of his teachers. Fred was comfortable with the meeting as he had been involved in IEP meetings since he was 8. When I asked him what he thought his goals needed to be for the next semester he clearly articulated the following:

  • I want to be able to talk to 5 girls
  • I want someone to laugh at a joke I say
  • I want to be asked to go to someone’s house after school.

Pretty clear goals don’t you think!

How to find your new career?

With a parallel career, you can have the proverbial cake (change career) and eat it as well (keep your job).

Begin your career change assessment by taking  a career test and then looking at your current and previous jobs. Knowing your personality traits and having knowledge of certain skills new processes and practices, you must have picked up will help you to make a decision.

If you are in a senior executive position, other perks may include: company vehicle, club membership, stay in 5-star hotels, fly business class, magazine subscriptions, overseas travel, attend exhibitions, etc. We call all these your Assets and Skill set.

The first part of your career change assessment is to identify your Assets and Skill set.

YOUR ASSETS AND SKILL SET CAN FORM THE FOUNDATION OF YOUR NEW CAREER.

Combine this with the comfort of a monthly paycheck and the result is a much less stressful career change experience and a faster arrival at your end goal.Emphasize: It’s easier when you’re still getting your monthly paycheck. Example of how you can leverage your Assets and Skill set in your parallel career:

When You’re Trying to Sleep And You Cannot

When you are trying to sleep and you cannot, it is an extremely frustrating experience. Most of us are okay with losing an occasional night’s sleep. However, if the problem continues it can really begin to interfere with your life.

Some insomnia side effects include an increased propensity to become ill and a decrease in your overall performance. If getting a good night’s sleep has become a challenge to you, here are some things that you might want to consider.

Chances are, your sleep environment is impacting how you sleep much more than you currently realize. While most people think to make sure that their mattress is as good as they can afford, they often fail to address other issues. How bright your room is, the temperature and the amount of clutter are also key factors in how you sleep.

A dirty or cluttered room makes it very difficult to fully relax. Before you go to bed each night, take the time to make sure that your room is neat and free from any clutter. It is important to avoid eating in bed because crumbs can really disturb your sleep.

Blogging is Dumb, Here’s Why

More than once I have been advised that the way to have a popular blog is to narrow the focus, and craft your writing for a more immediate takeaway.

This is true. Mostly.

People are drawn to read something by the promise of what’s in it for them. People share with their friends because they believe it will be of benefit to them.

That might be to make them laugh. Sometimes it’s to make them think but usually? It’s to inform them.

What’s so wrong with that? Informative is but one style of writing. While I can accept that blogging is a different practice than writing, I cannot so easily toss out so many other great styles and approaches.

Many people who are serious about their writing start a blog as a way to build their platform and reach a wider audience. However, after putting in the time and content many writers become discouraged and hasten to find solutions.

6 Weak Leadership Styles and 6 Antidotes for Positive Outcomes

In part 1 and 2 of this series we collectively looked at the Incompetent, Know it All, Intimidating, and the Unorganized weak leadership styles.

5. The “Micro-Manager” Leader

We all know the Micro-Manager. This is the manager who has to be involved in everything you do.  These leaders are very detailed oriented, take ownership, have solid memories and a strong ability to multi-task. What they don’t get is that their success as a manager is dependent on their ability to empower their team – which to me, is a prime.

“Micro-Managers” lead by holding hands, not by: providing concrete direction, empowerment, and making good decisions.  This is a leadership style that is purely innate, and nearly impossible for one who possesses these natural traits to change.

Everyone doesn’t dislike the leadership style of the “micro-manager”, but I do.  While I appreciate their ability to assist when needed, I thrive on having the ability to take complete ownership of my responsibilities, operating as my own entity within a larger corporation.  Working under a “micro-manager” makes that difficult because they have to have their hands in everything; minimizing one’s ability to be creative and sometimes efficient.

The Micro-Manager Antidote

In all honesty, this type of leader doesn’t come jam-packed with negative attributes. To me, they are more annoying than weak.  If you are a mediocre performer, then you will consistently face the wrath of their annoyances.  Although I’m a high performer, their constant presence is enough to get in my way.

Productivity increases when…

I run a blog about a blog, and it keeps me really busy so I often hear my friends saying that there’s not enough time available to do everything they truly want to do: to start that dream project, to get a better degree, to research the possibility of changing a job. If I said to them: “You can have that, but you need to stop reading feeds and outsource comment moderation,” most people would respond: “It’s not that simple.” Let’s see how you can go about increasing your effectiveness. Your productivity increases when…

But it is. If you can eliminate three hours of the inessential from your week, and doing your dream takes three hours a week, you can have it. I’m not suggesting that you do all the below, but I’d like you to ask yourself each question and consider the pros and cons of your answer. How much time would you save? What’s the trade-off? A mental exercise rather than a prescriptive list, I want you to start thinking about where elimination fits in your routine.

What if you stopped moderating comments?
Here’s an experiment to conduct for a week: note down the number of comments you moderate over a week, then write down the number of comments you had to mark as spam or delete. If the number of offending comments is very small, you could consider turning off comment moderation. You’ll probably be reading the comments on posts anyway, and can delete any spam you see at that point.

Never do this: Student Educational Loan Consolidation!

As a student, you may have taken out various student loans but are unable to pay them now. If debt management has become a problem, then you can opt for student educational loan consolidation. In this case, you take out a loan that pays off all your multiple student loans and thus, you need to pay only towards the student educational loan rather than paying your multiple creditors. It also offers lower rates of interest as compared to your current loans and thus, reduces the total amount that you needed to pay.

This process surely has many advantages, but it also has many disadvantages. Some of the disadvantages of student educational loan consolidation are as follows.

1. Can not predict future rates: When you opt for an educational student consolidation loan you are not sure what the interest rates will be in future. As you can not predict these future rates you may end up paying much more than what you were supposed to pay originally. The interest rates in future may fall, and you may pay more than necessary. However, those rates may rise as well and in that case, you benefit. Predicting the future is impossible and thus, consolidating your student loans could not be beneficial at all.

Take a school trip to a foreign country!

One of the most exciting things about taking a language at my high school was always that every other year they took a trip to a country that spoke the respective language. Spanish learners went to Spain, Punjabi learners went to India, German learners went to Germany.

For the kids who went on these, they were a ton of fun. I had the pleasure of going to Germany in the summer of 2010, and I would fully recommend making a similar trip. If you’re unsure if you want to go or not, maybe I can convince you.

If your family doesn’t travel much, this might be one of the only opportunities you have to travel, let alone leave your home country.

The best way to decide if you want to go on the trip is to consider who else is going. As I said, my high school goes every other year, and I knew originally that I could go either in 2013 or in 2014. While going in 2014 would have been a great reward for graduating high school.

Don’t think like that! I opted instead to go in 2013 because I had far more good friends going, and I’m very glad I went when I did. My friends who didn’t go the first time ended up regretting it, most didn’t go at all. Going with friends makes it far more enjoyable and means when you come back, you’ll have someone to share your inside jokes with.
